about

Corazon (Cora) Alma Downey is an interdisciplinary sculpture artist whose work manifests as visual and material representations of personal experiences and inquisitive moral questions. Downey uses art making as a method of challenging socially enforced expectations of the female body, cultural identity and belonging, gender roles, workforce and labor norms, human purpose, and personal ethics.

Downey uses a diverse set of mediums that often include textiles, cyanotype, sculptural objects, photography, video and audio, and interactive technologies. In whatever her chosen medium, Downey’s work often joins multiple materials and illustrates her concept through the way these materials are positioned to interact.

As a performer in the circus growing up, Cora has persistently been inspired by costumes and fashion. This young fascination manifests in her practice and drives her artistic and professional curiosity in fashion design, textile development, and human centered design. She has recently been conducting archival research which lends itself to inspire her current projects as they explore topics of generational knowledge, archival practices, and the mechanisms of memory.
